frida kahlo

Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter she was most known for her  portraits, self-portraits, and artworks inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. She made a topic of a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. Frida was born july 6, 1907, coyoacan, Mexico City and died july 13,1954. Kahlo was deeply influenced by indigenous Mexican culture, which is apparent in her use of bright colors and dramatic symbolism. She frequently included the symbolic monkey. In Mexican mythology, monkeys are symbols of lust, yet Kahlo portrayed them as tender and protective symbols. She is celebrated in Mexico for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience and form.Kahlo, who suffered from polio as a child, nearly died in a bus accident as a teenager. She suffered multiple fractures of her spine, collarbone and ribs, a shattered pelvis, broken foot and dislocated shoulder. She began to focus heavily on painting while recovering in a body cast. Frida Kahlo has been associated with the surrealist movement, but her art is  a reflection of her homeland. The folk art of Mexico inspired Kahlo's work and it was her unique style that led to her world-side fame. Image analysis of  The Broken Column

painting by frida Kahlo

The broken column by frida Kahlo made in 1944 is 39.8 cm × 30.6 cm (15.7 in × 12.0 in) in size, and made of the medium Masonite. This painting shows frida in the center of the painting nude with a white harness wraped around her, nails sticking into her going down her body. There is a broken column in place of her spine. This oil painting was made after the artist had spinal surgery. The white cloth covering her bottom half represents a hospital sheet. There is emphasis on the column due to it being place right in the center of her body and the paintng itself. In the backround there shows a sky and land that almost looks as if its cracked and broken, as maybe this was ment to show a disaster has happened. This artwork shows space by the placement of the skyline, how it is higher up in the painting and how the main focus of frida herself overlaps the background. The colors used are dark and glommy this could be because Frida Kahlo used pain and suffering in many of her artworks and the colors were to convey that.

Diego Rivera's self portrait and Frida Kahlo's self portrait are similar because of the colors. Both of the artists used yellow and orange, warm tones in there artwork. However in Diego's portrait the backround is one color and the emphasis is mostly on himself. In Frida's self-portrait she made the backround leaves and animals, and like Diego's there is emphasis on herself  because of her being in the center, that the viewers eye go's directly to her.
